1. Fuel Characteristics Have Changed:
Diesel fuel characteristics have undergone numerous changes that can have a severe impact on engine operation and performance. Further changes are being forced by emissions regulations. These changes include restrictions on certain fuel components, such as sulfur. Also with the increases in fuel costs, alternative fuels such as bio-diesel are becoming more prominent.
2. Particulate and Debris in Diesel Fuel:
When diesel fuel comes from the refinery, it is clean and free from any particulates. However, as it is transported and stored, dirt and sludge can form which causes problems for engine fuel management systems.
3. Water in Diesel Fuel:
Poor housekeeping is probably the largest contribution to water in fuel problems. Water enters bulk fuel tanks via condensation, carryover from fuel distribution systems, leakage through the fill cap, and spill contaminant valve or piping. This can allow significant quantities of water to be pumped into vehicle fuel tanks.
4. Microbiological Growth in Diesel Fuel:
Water in diesel fuel can allow certain microbes to grow in fuel. Their waste products contribute to the overall particulate contamination. Particulates become trapped in tank walls, fuel lines and system components. The result is dirty fuel tanks, clogged lines, and plugged piping.
5. Develop and Maintain a Luber-finer® Fuel System Maintenance Program:
The development of a viable scheduled maintenance program and the use of good quality fuel filters are vital to protecting your investment. 1. Know Your Coolant Type:
Luber-finer® provides coolant filters, supplemental coolant additive (SCA), and coolant test strips for conventional coolant. In addition, we provide Non-SCA filters for long-life coolant.
2. Perform Visual Inspection of Coolant and System:
Perform a visual examination of the coolant to ensure that it is the proper color and free from debris, rust and lubricating oil. Drain, flush and refill if visual inspection indicates any contamination. In addition, check to make sure the radiator air intake is free of debris and obstructed air flow. Examine hoses for pliability and ensure that they are a safe distance from hot engine components. Check hose clamps for coolant leakage and proper tension. Also inspect for indications of a faulty radiator cap, which can lead to coolant breakdown and boil over.
3. Perform Testing of Coolant:
When maintaining systems filled with conventional coolant, it is vital to check for proper SCA level, pH and freeze point protection. This can be accomplished with the use of all-in-one Luber-finer® Coolant Test Strips. Be sure to test engine coolant at each scheduled service interval (20,000 miles) to maintain proper cooling system protection.
4. Treat Coolant with Proper SCA Products:
Once coolant has been visually inspected then tested with Luber-finer® test strips, proper treatment is required. SCA contains inhibitors designed to prevent generalized corrosion; nitrite for protection against cavitation erosion; scale inhibitors that keep hard water scale from depositing on engine surfaces; and buffering agents to reduce the acidity of the coolant. Luber-finer® gives you a sensible, economical way to maintain your cooling system with the proper SCA treatment.
5. Develop and Maintain a Luber-finer® Cooling System Maintenance Program:
The development of a viable scheduled maintenance program and the use of quality coolant products are vital to protecting your investment.
- Consult with engine manufacturers, your oil supplier and Luber-finer® distributor for recommendations.
- Use the correct API certified oil and Luber-finer® IMPERIAL XL filters.
- Use a high quality oil analysis program to monitor your engine oil condition at every oil change on all vehicles using the maximum oil and filter change interval recommended by the engine manufacturer.
- Review other maintenance practices to be sure they are being conducted according to recommendations.
Glossary of Terms
Anti-Drain Gasket/Valve (Engine Oil Filters) –
Prevents oil from flowing back out of the oil filter, through the inlet holes, when the engine is shut off.
Axial seal (Air) –
Utilizes a gasket to maintain a seal on the outlet end of the air cleaner housing.
Bottom Assembly –
Assembles tapping plate and bottom ring.
Bottom Ring –
Provides a groove for the sealing gasket and a flange for lockseaming to the filter body.
By-Pass Oil Filter
– Luber-finer® is the inventor of the world’s first and most popular by-pass filter. A by-pass oil filter is an added system designed to be used with a full flow oil filter to remove more and finer contaminant particles, such as dirt and metals, than the full flow filter alone. You can reduce the amount of used oil you generate by using by-pass oil filtration systems to extend oil life in your fleet vehicles.

Inner Liner –
The amount of time or number of miles the filter was in use before it was removed from service.
Material that removes contaminants.
One-Stage Air Cleaner –
dust removal system for intake air with a filter element only.
Overall Efficiency (Air) –
The percentage of contaminant removed from intake air.
Pressure drop –
Pressure on the clean side minus pressure on the dirty side.
Primary Air Filter / Outer Element –
element that removes around 99.9% of the air’s dust. The air flows through the primary filter first.
Radial Seal (Air) –
Utilizes urethane end caps to maintain a seal on the inner diameter of the filter and the outside area of the outlet tube.
Relief Valve / By-pass Valve –
Relieves excess differential pressure.
Resistance to flow.
Retainer / Spring –
Exerts pressure on the filter cartridge to the bottom assembly, maintaining an internal seal.
Safety (Secondary) Air Filter / Inner Element –
Optional filter that protects the engine during service of the primary filter and in case of a leak in the primary filter.
Tapping Plate –
Portion of the filter that contains the threads.
Two-Stage Air Cleaner –
dust removal system for intake air with a built-in pre-cleaner and an element.
